Year 1 to London Zoo!

On Wednesday 12th of July Year 1 headed off for an animal adventure at London Zoo!  After a rather busy ride on the tube, we arrived at the zoo and were ready to explore.  One area we all made sure to visit was ‘Rainforest Life’.  This term we have learnt a lot about rainforests across the world and it was really interesting to get some sort of idea of what a rainforest might really be like.  It was very warm and wet!  We saw lots of interesting rainforest animals that we had learnt about.  We were especially excited to see the slow moving sloth.  We found out lots of information about deforestation.  Huge amounts of rainforest are cut down every day.  This has a negative impact on the animal and plant life in the rainforest.  It is our job as rainforest warriors to spread the news about deforestation and let people know how they can help save the rainforest!

We also got to see many other creatures at the zoo.  Some of our favourites included the lemurs, komodo dragons, tigers, lions, snakes and gorillas.  Some children were even lucky enough to pat the camels!  We were a bit worried heading to the zoo about the animals being kept in enclosures, but were rather happy to see them well looked after with lots of space to roam around.

Year 1 Summer 2 - Launch Day

Year 1 had great fun as they launched into their Rumbling Rainforest unit this term by exploring the sounds in the rainforest.  We found the sound of running water very relaxing!  We learnt lots of new things about the Amazon Rainforest.  Did you know that it is the biggest rainforest in the world!  We also learnt that rainforests are located near the equator, in between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.  We had fun finding these on the maps and globes in our classrooms!  We had an adventurous trip through the Amazon Rainforest as part of our workshop and particularly enjoyed sorting through the creepy crawlies we found while we were there!  In the afternoon we had a go at some bush tucker trials.  We tried some rainforest themed foods and had to dig through some pretty disgusting rainforest goop to find some special prizes in the pit of peril!  We had some racoon relay races to discover which animals were the quickest and took a turn in the creepy crypt!  We designed some stunning animal masks and are very excited about our Bug Ball at the end of the term!

Year 1 Southend-On-Sea Trip

To celebrate the end of our Under the Sea unit during Summer 1, Year 1 visited Shoeburyness for a beach day!  We were able to do some field work for Geography while we were there and identified many coastal features.  Shoeburyness is definitely different to Wood Green!  We enjoyed dipping ours toes in the ocean, building sandcastles on the beach, collecting shells and rocks and completing our Beach Trip booklets.

Year 1 Summer 1 Launch Day

This week 1I dived into their new topic 'Under the sea'.  They were welcomed by a mysterious letter left behind by a scavenging seagull named Bert! He had left a mess all over the classroom and eaten all of our raisins! We read all about him in the story, 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch'.  Bert wanted us to make him his favourite mustard sandwiches. In the afternoon, we took part in a STEM challenge, to see who could create a basket out of paper or cups, which would hold a sandwich whilst travelling along a zip wire.  It was a great challenge and many of us were very successful. We can't wait to find out what other mischief Bert is going to get up to this term!

Year 1 Spring 2 Launch Day

On our launch day, Year 1 discovered some suspicious sandy footprints and a message in a bottle. It was left behind by Captain Pete Pigeon! Year 1 went on a treasure hunt and then created their own pirate masks and hooks.  In the afternoon we wrote letters back to Captain Pete Pigeon, and some of us had to walk the plank! Finally we had a good ol' pirate party followed by some cheese and pineapple swords. Ahoy me hearties!

Year 1 Spring 1 Launch Day

Year 1 launched into their new topic- 'Out of this world!' They arrived to some suspicious moon rocks outside the classroom. They then went on an alien hunt and returned to the classroom to find a trail of slimy footprints and a letter from a friendly alien called Vlutimong!  The children created alien spaceships and made astronaut costumes. In the afternoon the children trained as astronauts and learnt how to strengthen their core muscles. They even had a go at making their own space snack pack

Year 1 - Tower of London trip

To celebrate the end of our topic 'Long, long ago', Year 1 visited the Tower of London.  We saw the sparkling crown jewels, the ravishing ravens and even met some very important royal beefeaters.  We were given a guided tour of the keep, as well as training on how to be a knight.  We were able to learn even more cool castle facts!

Year 1 Autumn 2 Launch Day

This half term, year 1 will be learning all about kings, queens, knights and castles in our brand new topic, 'Long, long ago...' To celebrate the launch of our new topic, year 1 dressed up as royalty and experienced life as a royal.  They decorated goblets and crowns, took part in royal etiquette lessons and even learnt how to waltz! This was followed by a grand royal banquet, where the children ate traditional afternoon tea.

Year 1 Autumn 1 Launch Day

To launch our topic, year 1 came to school dressed as their favourite superheroes. They had to help save the school from an invasion of spiders. They worked together to solve several clues which eventually led them to the biggest spider of all which was hiding in Mr Atter's office! He was so happy that they had saved Trinity with their super clue solving skills.
