Year 1 Summer 1 Launch Day

Year One launched into their topic this week with a fantastic day full of lots of fun activities.  Year 1 children  came into a messy corner of the classroom with a special message from Captain Blackbeard!  Blackbeard was looking to recruit some Year 1 children for his crew!

To help them look the part, the children made some amazing pirate hats, eye patches and hooks!  Arghh!

The children also made some amazing pirate art including pirate ships, pirate wanted posters (which they needed to create their own scary pirate names for) and pirate paper plate faces.

To finish the day off, the children went on a treasure hunt around the school for Captain Blackbeard’s treasure.  They had to carefully ready each of the clues the captain left and find the hidden treasure.  Year 1 can’t wait to learn more about pirates and see if they are cut out to be part of the crew for Queen Anne’s Revenge.

Year 5 Spring 2 Launch Day

Year 1 launched into their ‘Out of this World’ topic this week with a fantastic day filled with fun space craft and activities.  When the children arrived they discovered they had been left a letter by a mysterious alien called Vlutimong.  After reading the letter, they followed his trial of destruction around the classrooms as they went on their very own alien hunt.  After that the children completed many fun craft activities all about aliens.  Their favourite were the aliens in underpants and the astronaut children.  To finish the day off we undertook some space research, sang some space songs and did some astronaut training. The children are looking forward to doing some more space training activities in PE during the rest of this term!

Year 1 to Science Museum

This term Year 1 headed to the Science Museum to launch them off onto their adventure into space for their ‘Out of this World’ topic.   The children had lots of fun exploring the museum, especially the Exploring Space room, where they found out lots of interesting facts.  Did you know that the first earthling in space was Laika the Russian dog?  She was sent to space in 1957.  Did you also know that the first man in space was Russian as well?  His name was Yuri Gagarin.  He went to space in 1961.  The highlight of our trip was definitely the movie in the IMAX cinema.  The children enjoyed learning all about life on the International Space Station and were interested to learn more about the jobs people do when they are in space.  Year 1 are very excited about the term ahead and can’t wait to find out more about space.

Year 1 to London Zoo

At the end of Spring 1 Year 1 enjoyed a fantastic trip to the ZSL London Zoo.  The children enjoyed learning all about rainforest mammals and fish.  They spotted sloths, curassows, tamanduas, iguanas and piranhas.   They were excited to learn the sloth was pregnant!  Some of them were lucky enough to have a talk with some of the zoo keepers and learnt some interesting facts about what life is like in the Amazon for rainforest animals.  The children were amazed by the size of the very grumpy gorilla and the playfulness of the not so terrifying tigers!  They also learnt about deforestation and were very sad to find out how this is affecting animals and plants in the rainforest.

Year 1 Spring 1 Launch Day

Year One launched into their topic this week with a fantastic day full of lots of fun royal activities.  Students entered dark classrooms with lovely rainforests sounds to begin their day.

Throughout the day, children worked through four rainforest challenges in    teams.  First they had to investigate the Amazon Rainforest and learn as many facts as they could.  They then chose animals to imitate all day.  After that they participated in some animal movement activities.  The children enjoyed some rainforest themed cosmic kids yoga and some rainforest dancing.  To  finish the day the children participated in the annual Bush Tucker Trials.  They had to find their way through the Creepy Crypt, uncover the secrets of the Pit of Peril , put their running skills to the test in the Racoon Race and put on their brave faces during the Bush Tucker Challenge.

During the day the children also completed many fun craft activities.  They made cheeky monkeys, animal masks, sneaky snakes and some fantastic rainforest birds.

Year 1 to Tower of London

This half term Year 1 headed off on an adventure to the Tower of London!  We were so excited to finally visit the place we had learnt so much about.  Our trip included a very informative workshop with Lady Margaret.  She taught us all how to become knights.   We learnt that knights used to leave their family when they were 7 to begin their knight training.  We learnt some cool knight moves – high-guard, mid-guard and low-guard.    On our self-guided tour we got to see the beautiful Crown Jewels, some of which we learnt were used by Charles ll in 1660 and by Queen Victoria.  We also visited the White Tower and got to see all the armour.  We were amazed to see how large King Henry Vlll’s armour is!  We also spotted many animal statues floating around to remind us of the exotic animal exhibition that used to be at the Tower of London.  The rain didn’t stop us from having a fantastic day and learning lots of new things about the Tower of London.

Year 1 Autumn 2 Launch Day

Year 1 launched into their topic this week with a fantastic day full of lots of fun royal activities.  Year 1 children were invited to come dressed in their finest royal outfits for the day. They read George and the Dragon in the morning and created their own dragons using paper plates using their amazing cutting skills. They then enjoyed a royal ball where they learnt to do 'The Virginia Reel'.  It was very exciting as they got to dance with a partner just like kings and queens do at royal balls.

In the afternoon they created lots of fantastic royal themed art and craft and shared a lovely royal afternoon tea of biscuits, crumpets and water. Year 1 are very excited about the term ahead and can’t wait to find out more about kings, queens and castles!

Year One launched into their new topic this week with a fantastic Freshwater Theatreworkshop called Kings, Queens and Castles.  The children thoroughly enjoyed the presentation by Vickie and were very enthusiastic as they undertook their Quest for Knowledge.  The children explored royal families and castles of the past and talked about the different people who helped to make castles function.  They role played cooks, cleaners, jesters, knights, squires, watchmen and kings and queens and discovered the roles and responsibilities associated with each job.  Children also spoke about Queen Elizabeth ll.  They were amazed to discover she has been queen for over 60 years!

The workshop concluded with a royal birthday celebration in Trinity Castle and a knighting ceremony where Year 1 were all knighted as Knights of Knowledge.

Back in class the fun continued as the children made shields, crowns and goblets and participated in ballroom dancing and etiquette lessons in the afternoon.
